THE EUROPEAN UNION INTRODUCES A SINGLE CASH TRANSACTION LIMIT STARTING IN 2027
The European Union has approved a unified maximum cash payment limit of €10,000, which will apply across all 27 EU member states under Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 aimed at combating money laundering and terrorist financing.
Key provisions:
• Starting from July 10, 2027, Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 will apply in all EU countries.
• Cash payments for goods and services will be limited to €10,000 — both in a single transaction and in related transactions.
• Member states may introduce stricter national limits (below €10,000), but are not allowed to set a higher threshold.
• The limit applies to cash payments; at the same time, customer identification requirements will be strengthened for large transactions (over €3,000).
• Enforcement will be carried out by the new EU Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA), based in Frankfurt am Main; its mandate and structure are set by a separate Regulation (EU) 2024/1620 and will become fully effective together with the new regime in 2027.
